Sites, not pagesDirectories store the title of each Web page and a brief description, but do not index the entire contents of pages. This means they are only useful for finding the main subject of a particular site, and a directory will give no indication of, say, all the surnames mentioned on a genealogy page. In fact, directories rarely list more than one page of a site, generally only the Home Page. This means that they are best used for finding sites devoted to particular subjects, and are not meant for finding individual pages. Note that most Web sites are listed only once on a directory, so you have to find the right section. To this end, most directories have a search facility. Indeed some Web directories do not have a page for each subject area, but provide access to their material only via a search facility. Other directories include: Yahoo itself has a substantial list of Web directories. |
