Java
While JavaScript is only intended for small scale interactivity, Java is a fully fledged programming language for the Web, and can be used to write entire applications (called applets), such as a Web-based calculator or a game. In contrast to JavaScript, you are not likely to be able to use Java unless you have (or are prepared to gain) considerable programming skills. And though in future it may be possible to put ready made Java applets (e.g. a search facility) on a personal Web site, at present using Java is practicable only for Web authors with a programming background.
